Traveling within India does not require a passport. You need a passport to travel to any country outside India. Note, you should have at least six months validity on your passport before your travel date – that is essential for visa applications/ immigration.

For beginners, a passport is a form of identification issued to Indian citizens that enables a person to travel abroad. Besides, it is also used as a proof of Indian citizenship and can be used to get documentation like the Pan Card and Aadhaar Card. Therefore, even if you don’t plan on traveling abroad anytime soon, it makes good sense to have a passport.
