I have to be honest: the best place in a plane is in the premium class. Absolute legroom, best possible service, optimal sleeping position – in the premium class, many a long-haul flight becomes a relaxing holiday. Unfortunately, that is not an option for most of us. Some will at least afford a ticket in the business class. The majority of us, however, take place in the economy class. But here, too, the suffering can be mitigated by choosing the right seat. The prerequisite for this: check in online at the earliest!

The best seats are at the emergency exits. Here you get a maximum of legroom at no extra charge. In the question of window or aisle, the ghosts divorced. Some consider the view from the window as another way to get some variety, and the others praise the possibility at the aisle to stretch out their legs and get up when they want it. Often frowned upon in everyday life, the jogging pants on the plane are a proven companion. For outerwear, it is best to choose a T-shirt and a sweat or fleece jacket over it. This is cuddly and keeps you warm. After all, it can also be uncomfortably cool over long distances on the plane. Often we recommend a scarf or a light cotton cloth. Many airlines overdo it with air conditioning – sensitive people should, therefore, protect their neck region.

As far as footwear is concerned, I recommend shoes that you can easily put on and take off, such as slippers, loafers or ballerinas. This is handy on the plane if you need to go to the bathroom and also facilitates the security check.

#MacroTravellerTips 3: Pack your carry-on Bag Sensibly

Anyone who has often flown in Economy Class knows that there is not much space here. Reaching an item at the bottom of your pack means having to pile up the entire contents of the pack on your lap! It pays to pack smart right away. When packing your hand luggage, think about what things you will definitely need and in what order.

For example, many people need their headphones to listen to music on a long-haul flight, then maybe have a quick snack in between, then you want to read something next, and finally, you need your utensils for a good night’s sleep. Most frequent flyers have the very own items that they would never do without on a long haul flight. Whether you prefer listening to music or reading a book, wearing cuddly socks or thrombosis stockings is up to you. The following helpers have proven themselves on many a flight:

  • Empty bottle for water
  • Earplugs
  • Sleep mask
  • Book, newspaper or magazines
  • Headphones and music
  • Toothbrush and deodorant
  • Nasal spray
  • Hand and skin cream
  • Lip care
  • Chewing gum for takeoff and landing
  • Pillow or neck pillow
  • Disinfectant wipes

#MacroTravellerTips 5: Pack the Right Snack

Drink, drink, drink! This is not an insider tip, but we cannot mention it often enough. During a long-distance flight, our body dries up. On the other hand, only water helps, if necessary also fruit spritzers. As nice as the glass of red wine is in the sunset too, you should leave it with a glass. Alcohol also deprives the body of water and is therefore contraindicated.

A few nibbles in between make for a certain pastime. Of course, it may be a chocolate bar or a few chips for the movie night on board. Again, it is advisable to give water-based snacks such as fruits and vegetable preference.

#MacroTravellerTips 6: Provide Movement

Not everyone is extrovert enough for the jumping jack on the lower deck. But there has to be some movement. Experts recommend travelers on a long-haul flight to get up and move about once every hour. Just walk up and down the aisle, grab something to drink, or take a trip to the restroom to stretch your legs. Besides, many exercises can be performed while sitting. For example, you can lift your legs slightly and pull the toes of your right and left legs towards you one at a time. This simple exercise stimulates the venous activity – very well against heavy legs.
