World Tourism Day (WTD), celebrated every year on 27 September, is a global observance to highlight tourism’s social, cultural, political and economic value. To emphasize the potential of tourism to provide opportunities at the local level, making people actively participate in the decisions that can benefit their communities, with tourism as a vehicle for sustainable development.
The primary purpose of World Tourism Day is to promote awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its cultural, social, political and economic values. The date of the nominee is especially appropriate because it corresponds to the end of the high tourist season of the northern hemisphere and the beginning of that season in the southern hemisphere when tourism is a topical issue for hundreds of thousands of people from around the world belonging to all sectors of society.
“One billion tourists, one billion opportunities.”
World Tourism Day highlights the global potential of tourism for the benefit of socio-economic development. With over one billion international tourists traveling the world every year, travel has become a powerful transformative force that has a definitive influence on the lives of millions of people.
The potential of tourism to lead sustainable development is considerable. As one of the principal sectors of employment peers in the world, tourism offers significant capital opportunities, contributing to relieve poverty and promote inclusive development. As tourism revolves around encounters between different peoples, the sector can promote multicultural understanding and increase awareness of the need to preserve cultural and natural heritage.
As the world prepares to adopt a new agenda for sustainable development, the capacity of tourism to create jobs, promote local cultures and products, promote the conservation and sustainable use of marine and terrestrial habitats must be recognised.
Let us all work together to make the most of the immense potential of tourism to promote inclusive economic growth, protect the environment and promote sustainable development and a dignified life for all.
Tourism For All | MacroTraveller
But beyond being a celebration date for all of us travel lovers, UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) brings a thoughtful and friendly message to all of us with its theme: Tourism for all – Promoting universal accessibility. Tourism for all, in recognition of the right of all citizens to access leisure time, cultural proposals, sports, etc. in the different tourist destinations.
When we travel, we meet new people, we see new landscapes, and we have new ideas. Often our perception of the world changes as we know it more. However, we must not forget that for many, traveling can be a complicated process.
“Tourism for all” is about creating environments that can meet the needs of all of us, whether we are traveling or even in our homes. Whether due to some kind of disability, even temporary, families with small children, or even with the aging population, at some point in our lives, sooner or later we will all benefit from universal accessibility in tourism.
MacroTraveller wish everyone a lot of incredible trips and experiences around the world!
